Parking
Several residents have agreed that from Sunday evening (15th Feb), they will park their vehicles alongside the kerb in Abbotts Road and All Saints Road. If the vehicle is legal (taxed, insured etc.) and facing in the direction of the traffic flow, and is not opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, it appears that this is in accordance with the Highway Code (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860), and the councillor's blog (see link) suggests the same. The more people who do this, the more effective it will be.

Please think before parking to spite buses. In turn you are stopping fire engines and ambulances. I truly hope no one in All Saints or surrounding areas need an ambulance but if you do seconds can count. Having to negociate badly parked cars can cost vital seconds.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention causing 40ft delivery lorries having to leave the one way section the wrong way....Please dont make the next thing someone being hurt not expecting something coming out of All Saints the wrong way be that a car turning into All Saints or a child crossing.
Please think this in perspective...a bus going past your house or someones life.
Also if you cannot park opposite a junction surly that will mean we can no longer park opposite hazelhurst Road entrance....
ReplyDeleteWe are not parking on the road to "spite" buses; we are parking on the road to make it a safer place. Both fire engines, ambulances and 40ft delivery lorries can drive down All Saints Road with the cars parked legally FULLY on the road. Safety is, of course, of paramount concern to all residents. To this end, before taking action we consulted police, council officials and representatives of Sainsburys, who visited the road, took the appropriate measurements and ascertained that fire appliances and other large vehicles can indeed pass safely down the road when our cars are parked on the road. None of the residents were prepared to take action until we had been reassured in this way that we were not breaking the law and that safety was not compromised. We have also consulted with the management of Sainsburys who agree that their trucks can pass down the road without undue difficulty. We have offered to be of assistance if there ever is a problem for their delivery trucks, though this has never been necessary. None of the cars are parked "badly", they are parked normally and legally on the kerbside. Indeed, they are increasing the safety of pavement users, especially for the many pushchair users, elderly and disabled residents of this and surrounding roads. Please bear in mind that large buses have for many years parked illegally and dangerously at the top of All Saints Road, compromising the safety of both road users and pedestrians. When we (illegally) parked on the pavement to allow the buses to pass freely, many bus drivers used to drive down this road at speeds that all of the residents felt were highly dangerous. This is a narrow road, heavily populated with young families. I hope that I have addressed the concerns you raise in your very emotive appeal, em999. I can assure you that the residents of this road are just as emotive in their opinions about the dangers posed by the buses.
ReplyDeletethanks Dave, while I agree the majority are parking safely some are not and some of the Sainsburys lorries are still leaving the incorrect way(Friday afternoon!), maybe again you can speak to your contacts at sainsburys and inform them of this.
ReplyDeleteFurther to the 10 metre rule, does this mean in Abbotts Road we need to be careful where we do park as with the main road and Hazelhurst and the All Saints junction to leave 10 metres we may struggle.
